MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Welcome to the Reading Hospital Department of Surgery. The department includes twelve divisions and more than 150 providers. Services provided to the greater Berks County region include a full spectrum of surgical care, including CT Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Advanced Laparoscopic as well as Robotic General and Bariatric Surgery, complex Hepatobiliary Surgery, a large volume of standard General and Trauma Surgery procedures, as well as all of the traditional subspecialty care you would expect from a large academic-affiliated community hospital department. Our Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation Accredited Level 1 Trauma Center accepts patients into the busiest emergency department in the state of Pennsylvania. Reading Hospital is the tertiary-care, flagship hospital of Tower Health, a system of three main hospitals in the Route 422 corridor between here and Philadelphia. Reading receives transfers almost daily from our sister institutions as well as from other surrounding hospitals.
Reading Hospital has transformed into an academic center of excellence. We are the anchor of Graduate Medical Education for Tower Health, which offers 35 ACGME Accredited residency and fellowship programs. In addition to the ACGME accredited programs, the hospital offers residencies in podiatry and pharmacy. The department also supports a Bariatric Surgery fellowship. Tower Health and Drexel University partnered in 2018 to create Drexel University College of Medicine at Tower Health, a regional medical school campus where medical students matriculate for four years, the first two at a state-of-the-art facility located about a mile from Reading Hospital. The clinical years of those students is spent almost entirely at Reading Hospital. As a department, we are very happy to have these undergraduate medical students in our ORs and on our wards.
In my almost two decades on this campus, I can honestly say it is one of the most pleasant environments in which to work. I am positive that you will find it a pleasant environment in which to learn. This large department of excellent surgeons and their collaborating advanced practice providers amaze me daily with the quality care that they provide to the citizens of Berks County and the surrounding communities. The patients appreciate their providers as skilled clinicians, and I am certain you will appreciate them as excellent teachers.
Thank you for your interest,
Thomas A. Geng, DO
